Sip Like Santa: 3 Festive Smoothies to Detox, Energize, and Uplift
Greetings 4am Fitness Crew.
Santa’s Fat Burner Smoothie.
Santa’s Hangover Smoothie (Liver Health).
Santa’s Immune Support Smoothie.
The Why?
Let us cut to the chase: Christmas, The Holidays – or however we sentimentally refer to this magical time of the year, is as much a celebration of gastronomy as it is spiritual, cultural, and familial. A vibrant fusion of all the above - a wondrous and joyous fusion - that often leads to gastric confusion, overload, and toxicity. Healthy smoothie anyone?
7 Amazing Smoothie Health Benefits
Improve digestion and gut health.
- Blending breaks down fiber, making nutrients more bioavailable (Nutrients, April 2018).
Hydrate better than water alone.
- Smoothies provide electrolytes and carbohydrates important for absorption (J Acad Nutr Diet. 2019).
Increase fruit and vegetable intake.
- Adds 4+ servings of produce is easily absorbable through a straw (Int J Behav Nutr Phy. 2017).
Help manage weight.
- Studies show smoothies paired with healthy meals support better weight control than fruit juice (Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. 2013 Aug).
Lower disease risk.
- Phytochemicals, vitamins, and antioxidants in wholesome smoothie ingredients can prevent chronic illnesses (Food Funct. 2015 Oct).
Energize and enhance the skin.
- Combinations of healthy fats, protein, and nutrients boost glow. (Int J Cosmet Sci. 2006 Jun).
Detoxify the liver.
- Ingredients like spinach, kale, ginger, and beets help activate Phase II detox enzymes, reducing oxidative stress on the liver (Oxidative Med Cell Longev. 2016).
The When?
Since the main reason for our detox smoothies is … detoxification, it stands to reason that having one’s smoothie early in the morning on an empty stomach will be most beneficial. You do not want to compete for stomach space with Egg Benedict, OJ, and … I don’t think so. My smoothies are very selfish and will not share any digestive space with other foods. However, you can enjoy a glass of water, tea, or black coffee – these being complementary to the detoxification process. About an hour later, you can indulge in your nutrient-loaded smoothie. Wait for one hour after your smoothie to have breakfast (Check out our “So Easy Healthy Oatmeal Vegan and Gluten-Free Breakfast Recipe”).
The How?
Invest in a high-quality blender.
Invest in organic produce where available and possible.
Ice cream is my weakness – I could devour it all day long – but I resist for the “greater good,” my health. Smoothies, on the other hand, solve my unhealthy ice cream cravings most healthily.
I simply add frozen bananas and psyllium husk for that seductive creamy, smooth, and tasty experience without the guilt. Psyllium husk and bananas also have amazing health benefits – a comforting WIN-WIN.
Bananas: Bananas add potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and prebiotic fiber to support immunity, digestion, heart health, and energy levels.
Psyllium Husk: Psyllium is a gluten-free soluble fiber with extensive research supporting its digestive and cholesterol-lowering benefits. Just 1 teaspoon provides 3 grams of dietary fiber to keep you full, improve glycemic control, and sweep toxins without impacting nutrient density.
