Don’t Give Up Today! 7 Reasons to Keep Going When Life Gets Tough

"Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Nelson Mandela

Greetings 4am Wellness Crew.

The Challenge

Burnout from relentless stress and adversity.

Shattered confidence from repeated setbacks and failures.

Emotional exhaustion from investing maximum effort with minimal results.

A fixed mindset that convinces you "This is just how it is."

We all face those difficult mornings, days …, and seasons of life, where, with meticulous and repetitive accuracy we are left exhausted emotionally, depleted financially, deserted socially, or all of the above – leaving us just wanting to throw in the towel, and flea to some deserted island or hide under a massive rock. But challenging times rarely offer such “luxurious” escapes.

Exercise: Pause … Take a deep breath (in), then slowly let it out. Repeat.

Relax, open your hands, and invite peace into your deserving space.

When you are ready, mindfully resume reading.

In our professional, academic, and personal lives, persistent obstacles can wear down our determination and enthusiasm, draining us of our resilience. But please, don’t step out of the ring just yet, these seven reasons and attendant evidence-based wellness exercises will reframe your mindset, retool you emotionally, and restore your passion -paving a path (for you) to triumphantly reclaim your deserving vision and purpose. Yes, believe again you will!

The Parable

Allegorical tales that emphasize the importance of perseverance and warn us against giving up too soon exist across all cultures. Therefore, you have (most likely) heard some adaptation of this parable from your family storyteller/historian. Hopefully, my tale ranks closely to the one fondly held by you, while reviving the moral lesson.

Jeb "Just a Pickaxe" Johnson swung his trusty tool with the fervor of a man possessed. For weeks, the scorching desert sun had been his sole companion, and the only glint of gold, his sweat-drenched brow. Just as his pickaxe sang its usual "almost there" melody against a particularly stubborn rock, a voice, smooth as desert honey, slithered into his ear. "Rough day, sunshine? Fancy a frosty milkshake instead?" Jeb, picturing a pink paradise instead of his dusty reality, tossed his pickaxe with a triumphant yell - “Yes sir! Lead the way!" A mirage, literal and metaphorical had just lured Jeb away, leaving the real gold buried just a swing's distance behind. Remember, Jeb, sometimes the greatest treasures aren't found by giving up, but by giving one more swing at that particularly stubborn rock, on that particularly hot and dusty day. You are reading this today because today is not a good day to give up.

The Reasons & Exercises

“It’s okay to doubt yourself, it’s okay to feel down; just never give up.” - Aaron Patzer

Reason #1: You are Closer Than You Think

The road of trials and tribulations can paradoxically be a sign of nearing your goal. When the resistance intensifies and challenges mount, the prize is often just around the bend. Surrender at this pivotal point would demean the struggles you have already endured and forfeit the life-changing breakthrough you have earned.

Exercise: Create a visual timeline documenting all the obstacles, sacrifices, and efforts invested toward your goal. Let this motivate you to keep pushing.

Reason #2: The Darkness Before the Dawn

Just as dawn is always darkest before the sun rises, realize that your current “midnight” may signal morning is imminent. If you were to give up now, you'd miss out on the light just over the horizon - the triumph atop the mountain within sight.

Exercise: Identify past examples when you persisted through darkness and were rewarded with a joyous dawn. Journal about how that made the struggle worthwhile.

Reason #3: Post-Traumatic Growth

Counterintuitively, enduring major life stressors and adversities can catalyze growth, healing, and positive change - a phenomenon researchers call "post-traumatic growth." By embracing these challenges through active coping and support, you naturally develop profound wisdom, strength, gratitude, and new potential. Avoiding them obstructs this path.

Exercise: Reflect through journaling on how you have grown from managing previous struggles. Let this mindset expand your perspective on your current challenges.

Reason #4: Unhinge Your Self-Worth

We often conflate our self-worth with our successes and failures. This is inaccurate and self-defeating. Your intrinsic worth remains constant regardless of the outcome - a truth to cling to when hurdles make you doubt yourself. Disassociate your self-worth from achievements and challenge outcomes.

Exercise: Voice a positive personal daily mantra that reinforces your inherent value daily: "I am deserving. I am enough. I have within me all I need to keep going, to keep leveling up."

Reason #5: Inspire and Be Inspired

When you refuse to give up in the face of adversity, you can become an inspiration to those facing similar obstacles. Your perseverance offers hope that change is possible by shifting one’s mindset. In contrast, reading about others who have successfully pushed through similar challenges can strengthen your fortitude.

Exercise: Follow inspirational social media accounts, read biographies, or join communities centered around people transforming their lives and communities through resilience.

Reason #6: Identity-Level Commitment

When you deeply commit to a goal or life path, it shapes your identity and who you are. Abandoning this ambition doesn't just discard an achievement, but fundamentally alters your self-concept and how you define yourself. Preserve this identity investment.

Exercise: Write a vivid self-narrative surrounding the identity you have constructed around your journey and dreams. Reconnect with your "Why."

Reason #7: Regret is Torture

While the struggle feels immense now, the regret and self-torment from quitting prematurely may plague you indefinitely. Rehashing the "what ifs" and wondering how your perseverance could have changed everything can induce lifelong anguish. Protect your future from these toxic feelings.

Exercise: Candid journaling - How might you feel years from now if you abandoned your ambition today? Allowing this taste of future regret may re-motivate you.

Embrace this Breakthrough Moment ... Your Empowering Deserving Moment

“What’s meant to break you blesses you with a fire you can’t extinguish.”        - Mahogany Monee

  • From Emotional Exhaustion to Renewed Passion

Reignite the consuming fire that fuels your dreams, restoring energy and zeal for your purpose-driven journey.

  • From A Fixed Mindset  to Limitless Growth

Shatter self-imposed constraints and embrace the mindset of continual evolution and boundless potential.

The Conclusion: Action It!

"Wherever you are in your journey, I hope you, too, will keep encountering challenges. It is a blessing to be able to survive them, to be able to keep putting one foot in front of the other - to be in a position to make the climb up life's mountain, knowing that the summit still lies ahead." – Oprah Winfrey

As a recreational distance runner, I have long learned, (that) if you want to gain stamina, strength, speed, and mental tenacity, you should not avoid hills. Instead, seek out challenging and unpredictable inclines and mountainous terrain – you are pushed, you are challenged - you become a better athlete. It sets your endorphins on fire and gives you an incredible sense of accomplishment. Most of us are ambivalent about hill runs, but life and our pursuit of purpose-driven success almost always leave us no other path.

Do not abandon your purpose and passion by quitting today. Not today! The hardships, hurdles – the (life) hills you currently face are forging unstoppable perseverance, unshakable self-worth, empathy, and solution-driven creativity shaped in the crucible of this season – A testimony of never giving up on your passion, on your purpose, and on the people and the community who look up to and depend on you.

Integrate these evidence-based mindset exercises into your daily routine to withstand the turbulent storms in your professional, entrepreneurial, academic, and personal space. When the ferocity of emotional winds batters your resolve, return to these reasons to anchor your motivation and reset your vision.
